Madeira: December 2001

Bom Dia (Good Day),

Hi, my name is Nelita and I shall be your guide for this tour of southern Madeira. I was born and brought up in Funchal, the capital city of Madeira and remained there until I was 21. The majority of my family have lived and worked all their lives in Funchal.

Most of the good things about Madeira have changed little since then. However, the most noticeable improvements have been the new roads and tunnels allowing much easier and faster access to other places on the island.

You will see the beautiful harbour and marina in the bay being overlooked by the equally beautiful city of Funchal, which stretches up the mountain as high as 550 metres to the small parish of Monte. There are several rivers running from the top of the mountains carving their way through Funchal and many other parts of the island. In the winter months these rivers can be very fast and noisy as the water rushes over the rocks. The irrigation channels are called Levadas and they make for very pleasing walks. We shall visit the market which is very colourful, and talking of colour you won't want to miss the decorative Christmas lights of Funchal.

The island is covered with all sorts of colourful flowers and trees, and most trees flower here too. You can't beat walking out into the garden and picking your oranges fresh for breakfast. Not forgetting the colourful fishing boats in the harbour of Funchal, the fishing villages of Camera de Lobos and Caniçal.

To visit the parish of Monte we have a choice of hiring a car or taxi, riding on a bus or if you're feeling energetic walking, though we shall be using the cable car. However, on the way down we have an extra choice, being slid down the mountain on a wicker basket sledge!

By the way, madeira means wood and that is exactly what this island was covered in when first discovered by Portuguese sailors. Madeira was the favourite place for Christopher Columbus when on his travels to the Americas.

These are just some of the sights we'll be visiting but first I'd like to introduce you to some of my family on this sub-tropical island called Madeira.

Hi, meu nome é Nelita e eu serei sua guia para esta excursão de Madeira do sul. Eu fui carregado e trazido acima em Funchal, a cidade importanta de Madeira e remanescido lá até que eu estive 21. A maioria de minha família viveu e trabalhou todas suas vidas em Funchal. 

A maioria das coisas boas sobre Madeira mudaram pouco desde então. Entretanto, as melhorias as mais visíveis foram as estradas e os túneis novos permitindo um acesso muito mais fácil e mais rápido a outros lugares no console. 

Você verá o porto e o marina bonitos na baía que está sendo negligenciada pela cidade ingualmente bonita de Funchal, que estica acima da montanha tão altamente quanto 550 metros ao parish pequeno de Monte. Há diversos rios que funcionam do alto das montanhas que carving sua maneira através de Funchal e muitas outras partes do console. Nos meses do inverno estes
rios podem ser muito rápidos e ruidosos enquanto a água se apressa sobre a rocha. As canaletas da irrigação são chamadas Levadas e fazem para caminhadas muito agradáveis. Nós visitaremos o mercado que é muito colorido, e falar da cor que você não quererá faltar
as luzes decorativas do christmas de Funchal. 

O console é coberto com todas as sortes de flores e de árvores coloridas, e a maioria de árvores flower aqui demasiado. Você não pode bater andar para fora no jardim e escolher suas laranjas frescas para o pequeno almoço. Não se esquecendo dos barcos pescando coloridos no porto de Funchal, das vilas da pesca de Câmera de Lobos e de Caniçal. 

Visitar o parish de Monte que nós temos uma escolha de empregar um carro ou um táxi, montando em uma barra-ônibus ou se você estiver sentindo andar energético, embora nós estará usando o carro do cabo. Entretanto, na maneira para baixo nós temos uma escolha extra, sendo deslizado abaixo a montanha em um sledge de vime da cesta! 

Pela maneira, madeira significa que a madeira e aquela são exatamente o que este console foi coberto dentro quando descoberto primeiramente por sailors de Portuguese. Madeira era o lugar do favorito para Christopher Columbo quando em seus cursos aos Americas. 

Estes são justos algumas das vistas que nós estaremos visitando mas primeiramente eu gostaria de introduzi-lo a alguma de minha família neste console sub-tropical chamado Madeira.
