HMS Achates

Achates leaving Marsamxett Harbour, Malta. On her port quarter is Manoel Island. On her port beam can be seen destroyers and other warships with the town of Sliema behind. 

On Thursday 31st December 1942 at 11:15 Achates was hit by gunfire from the German heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper, in the Barents Sea.

The commanding officer, Lt Cdr A.H.T. Johns RN was killed along with forty of his crew. The First Lt took over command.

At 13:30 Achates capsized. There were 81 survivors.
