BYMS(British Yard Mine Sweepers) |
During WWII, and before the USA entered the war, an agreement was made between the USA and Great Britain to lease-lend ships. Some of these were the American Yard Minesweepers, known as YMS's and Britain added the letter B in front to create the BYMS.
A hundred and fifty were lent to Britain. Numbers 1 to 80 were built for the Royal Navy and numbers 137 onwards were built for the United States Navy, though numbers 137 to 284 were later transferred to the Royal Navy. Numbers 1 to 134 had two thin funnels and 135 onwards had just the one large funnel. Other than the funnels, all the BYMS's were built to the same basic design, the hull being of wooden construction. |
