HMS Cumberland

Cumberland was a Kent Class heavy cruiser that was built by Vickers Armstrongs at Barrow. She was launched on Tuesday 16th March 1926 and completed on Monday 23rd January 1928. She served on the China Station with the 5th Cruiser Squadron until 1938 then South Atlantic Station at the outbreak of WWII when she witnessed the scuttling of the Admiral Graf Spee on Sunday 17th December 1939. In October 1941 she joined the 1st Cruiser Squadron Home Fleet covering the Russian Convoys until January 1944 when she was transferred to the 4th Cruiser Squadron Eastern Fleet. On Monday 12th November 1945 she returned to the UK when she then did "trooping" until June 1946. Cumberland was then laid up. From 1949 until 1951 she was converted at Devonport to Trials Cruiser with all of her original armament removed. From 1951 until 1958 she was engaged in a prolonged series of trials with 6" and 3" dual purpose guns, pre-wetting systems, propellers, etc. In January 1959 she was laid up for the last time. On Tuesday 3rd November 1959 she arrived at Newport to be broken up.
