HMS HERMES
Built in 1950 and served as an aircraft carrier and then converted to a
Commando Carrier in Devonport dockyard from March 1971 until 1973. In 1976 she was then
converted to a primary role of anti-submarine helicopter ship, whilst
still retaining her Commando capability. Modified in 1980 with a ramp
added up
forward as a Sea Harrier strike carrier. She was in this role as Flagship
of the Task Force in the Falklands war. In April 1986 she was then sold to
the Indian Navy and after a refit in Devonport dockyard was handed over in
May 1987. Renamed INS Veerat.
