Scarborough's commission of 1958 - 1959
(Christmas Island - nuclear bomb tests)

HMS SCARBOROUGH was a 'Whitby' class Type 12 frigate (2,150 tons) that was laid down on the 4th April 1955 and completed in May 1957 by Vickers Armstrong, Tyne.. (Ship adopted by Seaton, Devon). I served on her from the 1st December 1971 to 7th August 1972.

She was part of the 'Dartmouth Training Squadron' with sister ships HMS EASTBOURNE and HMS TENBY. 'Captain DTS' was onboard Scarborough and in charge of the squadron. The 'DTS' was used to teach officer cadets seamanship and give them experience at watch-keeping. The 'DTS' cruise would alternate between the Mediterranean and Scandinavia.

Invariably I would accompany 'Captain DTS' (Captain Wilfred Jackson Graham - later Rear Admiral)  as his signalman when he transferred temporarily to one of the other ships in the squadron. The mode of travel was by jackstay transfer (carried across on a pulley on ropes between the ships as they cruised along).

She was de-commissioned in August 1972 and sold to Pakistan in 1975 but not taken over and was then broken up for scrap in 1977.
